Samsung Galaxy S6: The Magnificent Smartphone

We are heading swiftly towards another year and meanwhile Samsung should be planning hard in its labs to do something revolutionary with its upcoming flagship smartphone Samsung Galaxy S6. It’s time for the Korean manufacturer to bring something exciting on the table since this year the company suffered some minor fall-backs in terms of overall profit. To survive in the electronics industry, it is important to react appropriately  with rapidly changing market conditions and looks like Samsung is lingering behind from past couple of months. So overall, we may get to see a well planned, streamlined approach with smartphone production from Korean manufacturer this year especially with the upcoming flagship.

Galaxy S6 has been in news as well as in online rumors. So let’s take a look on the possible features and specifications of the device.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Features:

A New Form Factor

It’s important for the Korean manufacturer to pull out all steps it can. It’s important to go beyond metal frame and plastic backs this time. Are they going to follow up the same form factor of its previous Galaxy devices or is it something new? Well, if Samsung has started off from scratch then we can expect a new form factor or at least they shall do something to ditch those plastic back cover.

Quad HD Or 4K Display?

According to internal sources from SamMobile, Galaxy S6 will feature a Quad HD display (2560×1440) which we have already seen in Note Edge. There isn’t any news on size of screen yet but keeping the size of Apple iPhone 6 and Nexus 6 in mind, we can expect it to be around 6 inches. Earlier there were rumors that upcoming smartphone can feature a 4K display but currently that rumor is overruled by this very latest rumor.

64-bit Architecture

Reports also suggests that the device would be powered by a Octa-Core Exynos 7 processor featuring a 64 bit desktop class architecture which would be unsurprisingly backed up by at least 3 GB of RAM to handle 64-bit architecture and everything else smoothly. The only operating system which supports 64-bit architecture is the latest Android Lollipop, so yes we can expect the device will ship with Android Lollipop.

Better Battery Life

We can also expect a bigger battery which will last more when compared to the predecessor. Also there are reports that Korean manufacturer is incorporating Broadcom’s latest BCM4773 chip which features GPS and all other sensors in single chip which in turn can dramatically improve overall battery life consumption.

Iris And Fingerprint Scanners

Galaxy S6 is also said to feature the Iris scanner along with a fingerprint scanner which undoubtedly will improve the security and also shortens the unlocking time of the device. We have already seen a heart-rate scanner in Galaxy S5, so we guess it will be intact in its successor.

Huge Inbuilt Storage

SamMobile also revealed that Samsung can possibly ditch the 16 GB variant and instead launch a 128 GB variant along with 64 GB and 32 GB variants.  Well we’re perfectly fine with that since 16GB seems too less nowadays.

A Decent Camera

Samsung had done their homework pretty well with the camera of Galaxy S5 and we can expect many more improvements in camera of Galaxy S6. This time they can bring in either 16 or 20 megapixel primary camera into the game which would feature some sensors to give a DSLR like experience to smartphone users.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Specs:

Processor is the soul of every smartphone and Samsung would be very careful while choosing a processor as well as chipset. We may expect Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset or Octa-Core Exynos 7 processor. Along with that it also supports 64-bit operating systems. So it’s very likely that a similar setup will be used by Samsung for its upcoming smartphone.

Update (4 November, 2014): It has been leaked that device will be powered using latest Exynos 7420, which is a 64-bit chip with four Cortex-A53 and four Cortex-A57 cores. However, there will also be a Snapdragon 810 chipset variant as expected, which is indeed a 64-bit chip. Thanks to SamMobile for the information.

We are highly anticipating that Samsung Galaxy S6 will have 3 or 4 GB RAM, considering the memory soaking features it is expected to equip.

We have already seen smartphones with QHD (1600 x 2560 pixels in Note Edge) displays, so keeping that in mind Samsung would be aiming for a 4K display. Recently Apple unveiled a 5K desktop which is still in the news. So I’m pretty sure that the Korean manufacturer would be planning a similar thing with its upcoming smartphone. Apart from 4K display, they can also bring the curved display to the table. We have already seen curved display TV from Samsung and recently in Galaxy Note Edge so its not surprising if Samsung uses a curved display for its upcoming device.

We are expecting Samsung to use latest Corning Gorilla Glass 4 for screen protection.

Update (4 November, 2014): It has been leaked that the device will feature a QHD (2560×1440) display. There is no information about the screen size though.

I’m pretty sure that giant Korean manufacturer would be aiming for 20+ megapixel primary camera in its Galaxy S6. Many experts criticize the inability of Samsung’s camera to do well in low-light conditions but we witnessed a lot of improvements in its predecessor. And we are very much sure that they would bring a lot of new innovative things to the camera of the successor too.

Rumors also suggest that the device will sport 5 megapixel autofocus front camera which is a good news for people who love taking selfies.

Update (4 November, 2014): It is leaked that Galaxy S6 will indeed support a 5 megapixel front camera. However, Samsung is still deciding whether the primary camera will be 16 megapixel or 20 megapixel.

Operating System

Operating system would definitely be Android 5.0 Lollipop since it’s the best we have got. Also Android 5.0 supports 64-bit chipsets so it would be a definite as well as good choice for the Next Big Thing. Overall we can expect a complete new look from software point of view.

A high spec’d device demands a high powered battery. So, taking rumors and Galaxy S5 into consideration, we are expecting the successor to be fueled with 3500 mAh Li-Ion battery.

Additional Features

As always Samsung is going to load up it’s flagship with lot of sensors. We have seen fingerprint scanners and retina scanners in Apple iPhone 6, so there’s a big possibility of adding an Iris scanner in its Next Big Thing. It’s actually important because they need to put some kind of awesomeness factor in its Samsung Galaxy S6 to steal adequate amount of buzz in smartphone industry.

Update 4th November, 2014 ( Device Has Been Codenamed Project Zero )

Samsung’s Next Big Thing has been codenamed “Project Zero“. The Korean manufacturer used to follow a sequence of alphabets as the codenames for its flagship devices, for example, Project J was for Galaxy S4, Project H for Note 3 and Project K for Galaxy S5. So there is no solid explanation to why they have broken the sequence and selected Project Zero codename for its upcoming flagship. Sources say that they are developing this device from scratch. So we can expect a new breeze of technology in Samsung Galaxy S6.

Another Update 4th November, 2014 ( First Set Of Leaked Specifications )

Galaxy S6 will be powered using latest Exynos 7420, which is a 64-bit chip with four Cortex-A53 and four Cortex-A57 cores. However, there will also be a Snapdragon 810 chipset variant as expected, which is indeed a 64-bit chip.

It will feature a Quad HD (2560×1440) display. No words about the screen size though.

It will sport a 5 megapixel front camera. However, they still haven’t decided about the primary camera yet.

It will be available in 32, 64, 128GB variants. 16 GB variant may have been eliminated.

Thanks to SamMobile for the information.

Update 7th November, 2014Samsung Galaxy S6 To Have Curved Display On Both Sides )

Jerry Kang, a senior analyst at IHD Technology said: “The Galaxy S6 to be released next year will feature a ‘dual-edged‘ screen which is curved on the right and the left sides.”

He also said that this concept was originally suggested for Galaxy Note Edge but it was dumped by Samsung. The curved part of the display acts as an separate independent display attached to the main screen.
